🌟 NBA Star Russell Westbrook Co-Founds End-of-Life Planning Startup! πŸš€

When Donnell Beverly Jr. decided to launchΒ end-of-life planning startupΒ EazewellΒ after the loss of both of his parents,Β he knewΒ exactly who to call to help launch the business: longtime friend, andΒ nine-time NBA All Star, Russell Westbrook.Β Β

β€œThe main thesis with Russ across every business that heΒ touchesΒ is how do weΒ impactΒ people?” Beverly Jr. [pictured above]Β told TechCrunch. β€œHe’sΒ been very vocal about that throughout his career.Β Β I always say we really tookΒ personal pain and then created a platform to really help people.”

Westbrook was in. FormerΒ four-time NBA All Star Kemba Walker also joined and the trio launchedΒ Eazewell.Β Β

EazewellΒ is an AI-driven platform that helps families navigateΒ andΒ automate the administrative aspects of end-of-life and funeral planning.Β TheΒ startup’s AI agent givesΒ people a 24-hour, 7-day-a-week resource andΒ helps users with everything from finding and bookingΒ aΒ funeralΒ homeΒ to cancellingΒ credit card accounts for a deceased person.Β Β

The company partners with different service providers, like hospiceΒ care, funeralΒ homes, andΒ various insurance companies,Β which allowsΒ theΒ platformΒ to be free to use with the option of paying for more premium features.Β Β

β€œI had an opportunity to be able toΒ be close with his familyΒ and goΒ through the process with [Beverly Jr.],” Westbrook told TechCrunch. β€œHe’sΒ done an amazing job ofΒ idealizing this idea and bringing it to life.Β I’mΒ excited to kind of be partner with him alongside him on this.”

Beverly Jr.Β said he got the idea forΒ EazewellΒ afterΒ losing both of his parents inΒ a short periodΒ ofΒ time.Β Navigating what came after theirΒ deaths made him realize howΒ large of a burdenΒ theΒ end-of-life process can be β€”Β and how fragmented the marketΒ of these servicesΒ is.Β Β

He added that seeing the recent advancements in AI made him realize the technology could be used to help reduce theΒ number ofΒ administrativeΒ tasksΒ grievingΒ families need to tackle following a death.

β€œWe’ve seen how AI has impacted our lives while we’re here, but you know now we’re entering a space where it’s impacting our lives after death,” Beverly Jr. said.Β Β

EazewellΒ wasΒ founded in 2024.Β The company said it has been able to help more than 100,000 families sinceΒ itsΒ launched its platformΒ earlier this year.Β Β

Now, EazewellΒ isΒ rolling out a newΒ enterprise platform for hospiceΒ companies, senior livingΒ facilitiesΒ and life insurers. This allows companies to fold Eazewell’s automated features into their own management software.

In the future,Β EazwellΒ hopes to help people manage a loved one’s digital assetsΒ after they pass, a task that has become a bigger undertaking as people’s lives are increasingly online.Β Β

β€œThe average person has anywhere between 70 and 100 digital accounts that are active at any time,” Beverly Jr.Β said. β€œYour family is inheritingΒ allΒ those digital accounts and those digital assets as well. AndΒ that’sΒ not typical.Β We’reΒ stepping into a new kind of realm within that.Β When we look at the whole landscape, we seeΒ aΒ grand opportunity to not only helpΒ people butΒ just make it a lot more seamless.”

For Westbrook,Β EazewellΒ offers the perfect opportunity to go into business with a decades-long friend while also being able to use hisΒ platform to amplify a business that can help people β€”Β especially those fromΒ underserved andΒ under-resourcedΒ communities β€”Β navigate this painful and costly experience.Β Β

β€œAnytime IΒ put my name onΒ anything,Β I try to find waysΒ to open doors, build trust, find ways to play a big role in it and be present because I think that’s important,” Westbrook said. β€œAnd thisΒ isn’tΒ about me or being super technical by any means, butΒ it’sΒ more importantlyΒ about families finding ways to be able to help them through a loss. And for me, using my platform to be able to do that isΒ a no-brainer.”
