The setback did more than mark the first loss on Barboza’s record. It halted a climb that had placed him within reach of the biggest fights in the junior welterweight division. A victory over Lopez would have placed Barboza firmly among the top contenders chasing the division’s major names, including a potential bout with Shakur Stevenson that was widely discussed around that time.

Those types of matchups carry dramatically larger purses and visibility. Losing the Lopez fight meant stepping away from that tier of opportunity, at least for the moment, and Barboza later acknowledged that the defeat affected him more than he expected.

“I didn’t think that it would hit me as hard as it did,” Barboza said while reflecting on the aftermath of the fight. “I kind of didn’t want to step back into the gym for a minute.”

The admission offered a rare look at how fighters process a loss after a long unbeaten run. Barboza had built his record patiently over several years, climbing the rankings and positioning himself for the type of fight that could change his career. When the opportunity came against Lopez, the result went the other direction.

Barboza said the experience forced him to take a step back before returning to training and moving forward with a new team.

“I learned a lot from that loss,” he said. “I learned a lot about myself. I learned a lot about people, and it’s time to move forward.”

Saturday’s fight against Sims represents that next step. Sims enters with his own motivation after several close fights and years spent trying to secure a matchup with Barboza. Their bout now arrives at a time when both fighters are attempting to push back into the upper tier of the division.

For Barboza, the task is simple, even if the path has changed. The opportunity that once sat within reach disappeared with the loss to Lopez, and the only way back to those larger fights is to begin rebuilding momentum one victory at a time.

A convincing performance against Sims would move Barboza closer to that goal and reopen the type of opportunities that once seemed only a fight away.
