He lost to Ortiz more conclusively in their clash in February 2022. That was a one-sided 10-round unanimous decision defeat for Albright. In contrast, Nahir came close to defeating Keyshawn in October 2023.
“That’s a good fight for the fans, and a good fight for both of them,” said Nahir Albright to MillCity Boxing on Davis-Ortiz. “They’re going to get a big bag and fight on one of the biggest cards to start off the year.
“I’m going to go with Keyshawn on that one. I think he’s going to edge it out. I think his chin is questionable. I think Keyshawn might catch him. Yeah, for sure,” said Nahir when asked if he thinks Keyshawn is the “more durable” fighter than Jamaine.
Ortiz was hurt in his fight against Joseph Adorno in April 2021. He was dropped twice in that fight. In Jamaine’s clash against Antonio Moran in September 2023, he was hurt on a couple of occasions in rounds two and five. However, those fights were in the lightweight division. We don’t know whether draining down to 135 took something out of Ortiz in those fights. Since moving up to 140, he’s not shown any chin issues.
“They’re pretty even in skill-wise. Keyshawn has more dog, and I feel like. Ortiz’s chin, I don’t know. Probably Keyshawn,” said Albright when asked who has more power between Davis and Jamaine. “Ortiz has speed, movement, and agility.”
There’s not much difference in power between them. Davis might have a little bit more power, but he’s not a huge puncher, or at least he wasn’t at lightweight. Jamaine has enough pop in his shots to be a threat. What makes him risky for Keyshawn is his speed and combination punching.
Albright did a good job of avoiding Ortiz’s shots in their fight in February 2022, but he spent too much time trying not to get hit. His focus on eluding Jamaine’s punches cost him the fight, because there was too much dodging and not enough throwing back.
Keyshawn doesn’t have that kind of defense, and he’s got too much pride to run around as Nahir did against Ortiz. However, Davis went into defensive mode late in his fight against Andy Cruz in the 2020 Olympics. When Cruz started attacking Keyshawn with combinations in the third round, he got on his bike and stopped fighting.
That fight gave a glimpse of Davis’ mental makeup: he’s not comfortable when he’s being hit with combinations. That was years ago, so maybe he’s changed since. His opposition has been too lackluster as a pro to know if he’s gotten mentally stronger.
“I think Keyshawn will pull it out. This fight is Ortiz’s last shot, as far as getting a big fight. So, he ain’t on that running stuff. He’s going to come, they’re going to go to war, and may the best man win. That’s how that’s going to go. I don’t see him just running around. He knows what’s at stake,” said Albright.
It’s not just Jamaine with a lot at stake in this fight; Keyshawn has a lot riding on the line for this contest as well, as he’s coming off a blown weigh-in for his canceled fight against Edwin De Los Santos.
Davis will have been out of the ring for 11 1/2 months with nothing to show for it, and he’s still never fought any upper-level fighters despite being hyped due to his Olympic silver medal in 2020.
Top Rank took care of Keyshawn, not throwing him to the wolves at 135 like they could have done. So, he’s like a new car that has never been driven on the freeway. It’s been garaged essentially and warmed up occasionally.
