Sebastian Fundora did not hesitate when asked about Ryan Garcia’s next move, and in doing so, he drew a clear line between Shakur Stevenson and Devin Haney. The tone shifted when Stevenson’s name came up, and that shift revealed more than any direct prediction.
Fundora said Garcia “could win” if he fights Shakur, then immediately began outlining why it would be a demanding assignment. “This guy’s pretty smart,” Fundora said of Stevenson to Fight Hub TV. “He has the experience that this guy will lack. He was the guy. He is the guy.”
He described Stevenson as a fighter who will box, use angles, and lean on his pedigree as an Olympian and multi-division champion rather than stand and exchange. The explanation came with specifics, the kind of fighters use when they are measuring someone seriously.
Garcia looked disciplined in his recent win over Mario Barrios, and Fundora acknowledged the improvement. He mentioned Garcia’s amateur base and the reunion with his father as trainer as signs of growth. When the focus returned to Stevenson, however, the emphasis shifted toward ring awareness, composure, and championship seasoning rather than power or momentum.
Haney drew a calmer evaluation. Fundora called a rematch “a good fight” and said, “We’ll see if Haney learned from the last one,” while noting he favored Haney in their first meeting. The language stayed general and did not carry the same detailed breakdown that accompanied Stevenson’s name, where identity and control were central themes.
That difference says a lot. Stevenson was described as someone who dictates terms and forces adjustments over twelve rounds, while Garcia’s recent success came in a fight where exchanges were available. Fundora’s framing suggested that patience and discipline would decide a meeting with Shakur far more than speed or single moments.
Everyone knows Ryan Garcia is the guy who brings in the revenue, and Fundora isn’t denying that. But he clearly put Shakur Stevenson in a totally different bracket. It’s a category built on pure ring generalship and veteran experience rather than just the hype of a big event. When a reigning champion at 154 focuses on those specific details, it tells you everything about how he views the elite level. He didn’t have to say it out loud to make his point crystal clear.
