A medical issue has forced Albert Ramirez to withdraw from his scheduled bout against Lerrone Richards, which was set to headline Thursday night’s card at the Casino de Montréal.
Ramirez was hospitalized overnight from Tuesday into Wednesday, and doctors are evaluating a suspected case of appendicitis that has ruled him out of competition.
Ramirez entered the week without reported injuries and had completed his training camp. Promoter Camille Estephan said the decision was made on medical advice and out of concern for the fighter’s health, despite Ramirez wanting to proceed with the bout.
The main event will now feature an unbeaten light heavyweight contest between Mehmet Unal and Altin Zogaj. Unal, a Rio 2016 Olympian, will make the second defense of his WBC Continental title in his first scheduled main event appearance, while Zogaj enters as the European champion.
Unal turned professional in 2021 after signing with Eye of the Tiger and now trains in Montreal under Marc Ramsay. He is currently ranked inside the WBC’s top ten at light heavyweight.
In the co feature, Dzmitry Asanau will defend his WBC Continental lightweight title against Carlos Ramos. Asanau is ranked No. 4 by the WBC and No. 11 by the IBF.
Also on the card, Thomas Chabot meets Dominic Babineau in a scheduled ten-round bout at featherweight. Additional undercard bouts include Wyatt Sanford against Alexis Gabriel Camejo, Keven Beausejour versus Petr Strnad, and Dante Tice facing Gonzalo Manriquez in the opening bout.
