Hamzah Sheeraz’s move to super-middleweight has quickly altered how his career is being discussed, with his promoter now openly linking him to the division’s most established name. Following Sheeraz’s one-sided win over Edgar Berlanga in July, Frank Warren has made clear that he would welcome talks for a fight with Canelo Alvarez if the opportunity arises.
The Slough-based fighter made his divisional debut against Berlanga and produced a decisive performance that immediately placed him among the leading contenders at 168lb. While the bout stood on its own merit, it has also shifted the conversation around Sheeraz’s long-term direction, particularly as the weight appears to suit him more comfortably than previous campaigns.
Warren’s assessment
Speaking to Box Nation, Frank Warren explained his willingness to match Sheeraz with Canelo Alvarez, stating he would pursue the fight immediately if circumstances allowed.
“I would make him and Canelo tomorrow, if they would stand for it,” Warren said. “It’s a super-fight and I think he would beat him.
“I don’t know if Canelo wants that fight, but he is a fighting man. If I was him, I’d be thinking I’ll find better options, but I would love that fight to happen.”
Canelo has had to step away from a world title fight that was put in front of him. He is coming back from elbow surgery, so the focus right now is getting healthy. The plan is to be back in the ring around September, but you do not rush something like that. While that plays out, Sheeraz has been told by the WBC and WBO to move forward for their vacant belts. He will be looking at options like Christian Mbilli or Diego Pacheco, and those are real tests. If you are chasing titles, this is the kind of road you have to walk, taking the fights that put you where you want to be.
Those decisions may shape whether talks with Canelo become realistic. A world title win would strengthen Sheeraz’s position and provide clearer context for any future negotiations. For now, Warren’s comments reflect ambition rather than confirmation, but they also signal how quickly Sheeraz has moved into the centre of the super-middleweight discussion.
